Ponte City: Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse
Photographers Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse spent six years documenting Ponte City, a 54-story Johannesburg tower that embodied South Africa's apartheid divisions and their complex aftermath. Through over 1,400 photographs, architectural documents, and found objects, they capture both the building's physical transformation and the lives of its diverse residents, exploring themes of housing, migration, and systemic inequality. Complemented by Lindokuhle Sobekwa's photographic study of apartheid-era hostels nearby, this landmark exhibition—making its US debut at SFMOMA—reveals how architecture tells the story of a nation grappling with its past.
